EXPANSION: KEUMBOO

Spend the afternoon exploring the ancient Korean technique of Keum Boo. Literally meaning, ‘attached gold’, Keum boo is a process that bonds 24 karat gold foil to the surface of another metal, usually silver. This is a great technique to add interest to your work and elements of gold without breaking your budget. You will be learning this technique using the torch method. All tools will be supplied along with a limited supply of materials. Additional gold foil may be purchased during the workshop. Small pieces of sheet silver will be supplied as well. We highly recommend you bring additional silver pieces of your own to experiment on. Ones with textures, roll printing, or that are multidimensional could be especially interesting! EXPANSION: TUBE SETTING

Expand your stone setting skills and begin to incorporate faceted stones into your designs with tube setting. If you’ve never dealt with faceted stones, this is a great introduction into working with them and a natural transition from cabochon bezel setting. In this one day workshop, you will learn how to properly cut a seat for round calibrated and non-calibrated stones, measure your tubing for accurate depth and thickness, and to properly set the stone. Students will be working with burs, burnishers, files, pushers, and the flex shaft. The workshop will focus mainly on the techniques instead of a finished product. But you will have the opportunity to work on a piece of jewelry if you’d like, so feel free to come along with design ideas to incorporate your settings into. Please be sure to read our class cancellation policy before registering.

Sterling silver tubing and cubic zirconias will be supplied. Students should bring with them any sort of corrective eye wear they use such as optivisors and/or any additional round faceted stones they would like to try setting or have questions about. Workshop will be taught by the talented jeweler, Anneke Beard!

Prerequisite: Silversmithing 101 or equivalent basic jewelry making skills such as sawing and soldering, and familiarity with cabochon bezel setting is helpful.
